The focused update to the 2021 ESC HF guidelines recommends addressing iron deficiency when managing HF2

The update includes higher levels of recommendation and addresses a broader patient group for the management of iron deficiency in HF patients with compromised heart function2

Per the focused update to the 2021 ESC HF guidelines, ferric carboxymaltose should be considered for the treatment of symptomatic HFrEF and HFmrEF patients to:2

  • Alleviate HF symptoms and improve QoL
  • Reduce the risk of HF hospitalisation (regardless of hospitalisation history)

Recommendations from the focused update to the 2021 ESC HF guidelines

Recommendation – Class I/Level of evidence A2

Intravenous iron supplementation is recommended in symptomatic patients with HFrEF and HFmrEF, and iron deficiency, to alleviate HF symptoms and improve quality of life

Recommendation – Class IIa/Level of evidence A2

Intravenous iron supplementation with ferric carboxymaltose or ferric derisomaltose should be considered in symptomatic patients with HFrEF and HFmrEF, and iron deficiency, to reduce the risk of HF hospitalization
